Aadhaar errors — wrong name spelling, incorrect date of birth, outdated address — cause serious problems for government scheme applications, bank accounts, and exam registration. UIDAI provides both online and offline update mechanisms. This guide explains exactly how to correct every type of Aadhaar error with the minimum hassle.
Online updates via myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in (require mobile OTP): Address update (most commonly done online), mobile number update (via OTP to new number if old number is accessible), email ID update. You cannot update name, date of birth, or gender online — these are demographic corrections that require physical presence at an Aadhaar enrolment centre for biometric authentication. Offline (Aadhaar Enrolment Centre): Name correction, date of birth correction, gender correction, biometric update (fingerprints, iris, photo), mobile number (if old number is not accessible), address update (if no supporting document is available online). Important: UIDAI allows a maximum of 2 updates each for name, gender, and date of birth in a lifetime — these changes are strictly limited.
Visit myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in → Login with your Aadhaar number and OTP → Services → 'Update Demographics Online' → Select 'Address' → Enter the new address exactly as in your supporting document → Upload supporting document (one of: passport, bank passbook with photo, post office account statement, voter ID, driving licence, ration card, electricity bill (not older than 3 months), water bill, telephone bill, property tax receipt) → Submit and pay ₹50 fee. You will receive a URN (Update Request Number) — use this to track the status at resident.uidai.gov.in. Address updates typically complete within 30–60 working days. Your updated Aadhaar card can be downloaded from myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in after the update is processed.

If your old mobile number is accessible: Visit myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in → Login → Services → Update Mobile. Enter the new mobile number. OTP is sent to the old registered number for verification. Enter OTP and confirm. Fee: ₹50. If your old mobile number is NOT accessible (lost, number ported away, number deactivated): You must visit an Aadhaar Enrolment Centre in person. Carry your original Aadhaar (letter or card), a photo ID, and the new mobile phone. The operator registers your new number after biometric authentication. This process cannot be done online without OTP from the old number. There is no workaround — biometric presence is mandatory.
A name spelling error in Aadhaar affects bank KYC, government applications, and document matching. To correct: visit any Aadhaar Enrolment Centre (find nearest at appointments.uidai.gov.in). Carry original supporting documents showing the correct name spelling: passport (if available — most reliable), birth certificate, school leaving certificate (Class 10 certificate is widely accepted), marriage certificate (for married name). The operator updates your name biometrically. Fee: ₹100 (offline). Processing time: 30–90 working days. Enrolment centres give a 14-digit EID (Enrolment ID) receipt — track update status using this at resident.uidai.gov.in. Remember: UIDAI allows maximum 2 name corrections lifetime — use these carefully.
Date of Birth is the most strictly controlled field in Aadhaar. Rules: correction is allowed only once in a lifetime. Age can be changed by a maximum of 3 years from the existing date on Aadhaar. If the date needs to be changed by more than 3 years, you need to go through the grievance/exception route which takes 3–6 months. For a standard DOB correction: visit Enrolment Centre with original birth certificate (issued by municipal authority), hospital birth record, or Class 10 certificate showing date of birth. The operator submits the correction — it requires regional UIDAI office approval and takes 60–90 working days. For exam purposes: if your Class 10 certificate and Aadhaar show different dates of birth, always use the Class 10 date for government applications — and initiate the Aadhaar correction immediately.
After any update is processed, download your updated Aadhaar from myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in → 'Download Aadhaar'. The downloaded PDF is password-protected — the password is the first 4 letters of your name in capital letters + birth year (e.g., ADIY1990). This downloaded Aadhaar is as valid as the original physical card. For daily use: install the mAadhaar app (official UIDAI app on Android/iOS). The mAadhaar app stores your Aadhaar profile including a QR code. The digital Aadhaar on mAadhaar is accepted for government ID purposes. For children under 5: Aadhaar (Baal Aadhaar, blue in colour) does not have biometrics — it needs mandatory biometric update at ages 5 and 15.
