Government job interviews are unlike private sector interviews. They are not testing your presentation skills or sales ability — they are assessing your personality, awareness, integrity, and suitability for public service. This guide explains exactly what interviewers look for and how to prepare.
The UPSC Interview Board evaluates candidates on mental calibre, social traits, intellectual depth, moral integrity, and leadership potential. It is NOT a test of knowledge — examiners assume you have sufficient knowledge given you cleared Mains. They are testing how you think, how you react under pressure, and whether you have the qualities to serve as a civil servant. Questions are often based on your DAF (Detailed Application Form) — be thoroughly familiar with everything you wrote in your DAF.
Bank PO interviews (SBI PO, IBPS PO) typically last 15–20 minutes. Interviewers ask about: banking sector current affairs (RBI policies, bank mergers, NPAs), your academic background and why banking, situational questions (how would you handle a difficult customer), general awareness, and your strengths and weaknesses. Wear formal attire, maintain eye contact, speak clearly and confidently, and never bluff — interviewers respect a composed 'I don't know' far more than a confident wrong answer.

The SSB (Services Selection Board) is a 5-day process — not a single interview. It includes a Psychological Test (TAT, WAT, SRT, SDT) on Day 2, Group Testing Officer tasks (outdoor leadership tasks, group discussions, group planning exercise, progressive group task) on Days 3–4, and the Personal Interview with a senior officer on Days 3–5. The entire 5-day process evaluates 15 Officer Like Qualities (OLQs) including effective intelligence, courage, initiative, speed of decision, and cooperation. There is no specific 'preparation' — you demonstrate who you genuinely are.
PSU interviews (ONGC, BHEL, NTPC, GAIL) assess technical knowledge in your engineering branch, awareness of the PSU's operations, sector-specific current affairs, and general personality. Prepare by thoroughly revising your engineering subjects (the technical round can be very detailed), reading the PSU's annual report and recent news, and knowing your GATE score and rank clearly — interviewers will ask about it.
Giving memorised bookish answers rather than your genuine opinion — interviewers can tell immediately. Overconfidence and interrupting the interviewer. Coming in unprepared about your own DAF/application. Dressing inappropriately — formal, clean, conservative attire is mandatory. Speaking too fast due to nervousness. Pretending to know something you do not — always acknowledge uncertainty politely.
Revise your DAF/application form cover to cover. Read the last 30 days of major news headlines. Know your home state's geography, current affairs, and significant events. Practice mock interviews with someone who will give honest feedback — not just encouragement. Sleep well the night before — mental sharpness matters far more than last-minute cramming.
