Digital India Initiative

Digital India is a flagship programme of the Government of India launched in 2015 with the vision of transforming India into a digitally empowered society and knowledge economy. It operates across three key vision areas: digital infrastructure as a core utility for every citizen, governance and services on demand, and digital empowerment of citizens. The programme encompasses over 30 sub-initiatives ranging from BharatNet rural broadband and Common Service Centres to DigiLocker, UPI, Aadhaar, and skill development for the digital economy.

For ordinary citizens, the most impactful Digital India services are: DigiLocker (store and share government documents digitally), UMANG app (access 1,000+ government services from a single app), eSign (sign documents digitally using Aadhaar OTP), and Aadhaar-based authentication for quick access to government schemes. India's UPI payment system — now processing over 14 billion transactions per month — is also a product of the Digital India ecosystem.

For job seekers and students, Digital India matters because government services are increasingly moving online — from scholarship applications on NSP to job applications on NCS (National Career Service) portal to exam forms on exam-specific portals. Getting comfortable with digital services early gives a significant advantage in applying for government jobs and schemes.
