Cracking UPSC Civil Services is a dream for millions of Indians. The exam tests your knowledge across a vast syllabus but is very much conquerable with the right strategy. This guide walks you through everything from syllabus to daily routine to last-minute revision.
UPSC CSE has three stages: Prelims (objective, 400 marks), Mains (descriptive, 1750 marks + essay), and Interview (275 marks). Prelims acts as a screening test. Only Mains and Interview marks count for the final merit list. Start by downloading the official UPSC notification and reading it end to end.
GS Paper 1 (Prelims) covers History, Geography, Polity, Economy, Environment, and Current Affairs. Mains GS covers four papers โ History/Society, Governance/Polity, Technology/Environment, and Ethics. Read the syllabus daily until you can recall every topic without looking.

NCERTs for Classes 6โ12 in History, Geography, Polity, Economics, Science, and Environment are the backbone of UPSC preparation. Read them at least twice. Highlight key facts and make short notes. Do not skip NCERTs even if you have a college degree.
Aim for 8โ10 hours of focused study daily. Divide your day: 3 hours for static subjects (History, Polity), 2 hours for current affairs, 2 hours for optional subject, and 1 hour for revision. Take one day off per week. Consistency over 12โ18 months beats intensive bursts.
Read one newspaper daily (The Hindu or Indian Express). Note down important issues under UPSC topics. Use monthly current affairs compilations from reputed sources. Government reports โ Economic Survey, Budget, ARC reports โ are important for Mains.
Start full-length Prelims mock tests 3 months before the exam โ minimum 2 per week. For Mains, practice answer writing daily. Join a test series. Evaluate your answers against model answers. Answer writing is a skill that improves only with daily practice.
