PM Vishwakarma Yojana, launched in September 2023, is one of the most comprehensive support packages ever created for India's traditional artisans and craftspeople. It recognises 18 trades — from carpenter and blacksmith to tailor and potter — and provides skill training, modern tools worth ₹15,000, and collateral-free loans at just 5% interest. If you or a family member works in a traditional craft or trade, this scheme is worth understanding in detail.
PM Vishwakarma covers these 18 traditional trades: Carpenter (Suthar), Boat Maker, Armourer, Blacksmith (Lohar), Hammer and Tool Kit Maker, Locksmith, Goldsmith (Sonar), Potter (Kumhaar), Sculptor (Moortikar) / Stone Carver / Stone Breaker, Cobbler (Chamar) / Footwear Artisan, Mason (Raj Mistri), Basket/Mat/Broom Maker / Coir Weaver, Doll & Toy Maker (Traditional), Barber (Naai), Garland Maker (Malakaar), Washerman (Dhobi), Tailor (Darzi), Fishing Net Maker. The artisan must work with their own hands using tools — factory workers and machine operators are not eligible. One family member per household can register.
PM Vishwakarma certificate and ID card (recognition as a certified artisan). Skill training: 5–7 days basic training at a nearby training centre OR 15 days advanced training at a PM Vishwakarma training centre, with ₹500/day stipend during training. Toolkit grant: ₹15,000 for purchase of modern tools relevant to your trade — this is a grant, not a loan. Credit support (Tier 1 loan): ₹1 lakh at 5% interest rate (government subsidises the remaining interest above 5%). Credit support (Tier 2 loan): ₹2 lakh at 5% after successful repayment of Tier 1. Total potential credit: ₹3 lakh. Digital payment incentive: ₹100 cashback per month for completing 50+ digital transactions. Marketing support: access to government e-marketplaces (GEM portal) and national/international trade fairs.

Step 1: Visit your nearest Common Service Centre (CSC) with Aadhaar card and mobile number registered with Aadhaar. Step 2: At the CSC, the operator will open pmvishwakarma.gov.in → Artisan Registration → Aadhaar-based biometric authentication. Step 3: Fill your trade details, bank account number, ration card number (if applicable), and upload a photo. Step 4: District Verification Committee verifies your registration — this typically takes 7–15 days. Step 5: After verification, you receive your PM Vishwakarma ID card and are enrolled for skill training. Registration is free at CSC. You can track your registration status at pmvishwakarma.gov.in → Track Application.
You become eligible for the Tier 1 loan (₹1 lakh) after completing the mandatory 5–7 day basic skill training. To apply: After training completion, visit pmvishwakarma.gov.in → Credit Support → Apply for Loan → Your profile will show as 'Training Completed, Loan Eligible'. The loan application is linked to your nearest empanelled bank or Micro Finance Institution (MFI) — select the one convenient for you. The bank processes the loan within 7–15 working days. No collateral is required — the government provides credit guarantee through the PM Vishwakarma Credit Guarantee Fund. The effective interest to the artisan is 5% — the government bears the remaining interest burden.
The ₹15,000 toolkit grant is directly transferred to your bank account or can be used as a voucher at empanelled tool suppliers. After registration is verified: Login to pmvishwakarma.gov.in → Toolkit Application → Select your trade → The system shows approved tools for your trade (based on NSDC standards). Confirm the tool list → Submit application. The grant is typically disbursed within 30 days of application. You must use the money for purchasing the tools listed — retain all receipts as they may be verified. Misuse (buying non-trade items) can lead to recovery of the grant and disqualification.
PM Vishwakarma artisans get priority access to the Government e-Marketplace (GEM) portal — the government's procurement platform where ministries and PSUs buy directly from artisans. This can provide a stable, recurring revenue stream. To onboard GEM: visit gem.gov.in → Seller Registration → Use your PM Vishwakarma ID for fast-track approval. Additionally, MSME Ministry organises PM Vishwakarma artisan stalls at national trade fairs and Craft Melas. Your district's lead bank or MSME office maintains a list of upcoming fairs where PM Vishwakarma artisans can participate free of charge.
