SSC CHSL (Combined Higher Secondary Level) is the most accessible central government exam — open to any candidate who has passed Class 12. It fills posts like Lower Division Clerk (LDC), Junior Secretariat Assistant (JSA), Postal Assistant (PA), and Data Entry Operator (DEO) in central government offices across India. With over 30 lakh applicants and a relatively achievable exam, CHSL is an excellent first target for recent 12th pass students.
Lower Division Clerk (LDC) / Junior Secretariat Assistant (JSA): Pay Level 2, basic ₹19,900, in-hand ₹28,000–32,000 in metro. Postal Assistant (PA) / Sorting Assistant (SA): Pay Level 4, basic ₹25,500, in-hand ₹35,000–40,000 in metro. Data Entry Operator (DEO): Pay Level 4 or 5, basic ₹25,500 or ₹29,200. All posts include DA, HRA, TA, CGHS medical, and NPS pension. For a Class 12 pass, these are excellent entry-level central government positions.
Educational qualification: Class 12 pass or equivalent from a recognised board. For DEO posts in some departments: 12th pass in Science stream with Mathematics may be required. Age limit: 18–27 years for most posts (some posts 18–30 years). OBC: 3 years relaxation. SC/ST: 5 years. PwBD: 10 years. There is no limit on attempts — appear every year until you exceed the age limit. Candidates who have completed graduation are also eligible.

Tier 1 (CBT): 100 questions, 200 marks, 60 minutes — English Language (25Q), General Intelligence (25Q), Quantitative Aptitude (25Q), General Awareness (25Q). Negative marking: 0.50 per wrong answer. Tier 2 (CBT): Combines a Module 1 objective section (Math + Reasoning + English, 3 hours) with a Skill Test / Typing Test for specific posts. Tier 1 is the screening round — its marks do not count in final merit. All merit is determined by Tier 2 performance.
For LDC/JSA posts: Typing speed of 35 words per minute in English or 30 words per minute in Hindi on a computer. For PA/SA posts: Typing speed of 35 words per minute in English or 30 words per minute in Hindi. For DEO posts: Data Entry speed of 8,000 key depressions per hour. The typing test is qualifying — you must pass it but it does not add to your merit score. Practice daily on a computer keyboard from the beginning — muscle memory takes time to build.
CHSL and CGL share 70% syllabus overlap — if you are preparing for one, prepare for both. Key focus areas: Quantitative Aptitude (arithmetic — percentages, profit/loss, time/work, simple interest), English (error spotting, fill in the blanks, reading comprehension), General Intelligence (reasoning patterns — coding-decoding, series, analogies), General Awareness (current affairs, static GK). The Tier 2 English section is harder than Tier 1 — give extra attention to grammar and comprehension from the beginning.
Entry-level CHSL posts are not dead-end positions. LDC can be promoted to UDC (Upper Division Clerk) through the Staff Selection process, then to Assistant Section Officer (ASO) through the Limited Departmental Competitive Examination (LDCE). Many government officers today started as LDCs and reached Gazetted Officer level over 15–20 years. The government also allows CHSL employees to appear for SSC CGL and other exams while in service — many use CHSL as a platform to prepare for higher exams with the security of a government job.
