The Rural Works Programme, operational from 1971, was a centrally-sponsored scheme to generate supplementary employment in rural areas through construction of productive community assets. It was run through state governments and funded on a 50:50 centre-state basis. The RWP was subsumed into the National Rural Employment Programme (NREP) when NREP was launched in 1980.
