Launched on 4 April 2005, RGGVY aimed to electrify all villages (population 300+) and provide free electricity connections to BPL households. It provided 90% capital subsidy for rural electrification infrastructure including distribution networks, transformers, and metres. RGGVY electrified over 5 lakh villages during 2005-2015. It was merged into the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana (DDUGJY) in December 2014.
