Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY)

Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) is India's National Mission for Financial Inclusion — launched in August 2014 to ensure access to financial services such as banking, savings accounts, remittance, credit, insurance, and pension for every household. Jan Dhan accounts come with zero minimum balance requirement, a free RuPay debit card, and an overdraft facility of up to ₹10,000 for eligible account holders.

What makes PMJDY central to the Indian financial system is its role as the backbone of DBT (Direct Benefit Transfer). Subsidies for LPG, PM-KISAN, scholarships, maternity benefits, and dozens of other government schemes flow directly into Jan Dhan accounts. Without a Jan Dhan account linked to Aadhaar, many beneficiaries cannot receive government benefits.

As of July 2026, over 53 crore PMJDY accounts have been opened, with a total balance exceeding ₹2.3 lakh crore. The overdraft facility requires at least 6 months of account activity and is typically available to the primary earner of the household.
