The education component of Pradhan Mantri Gramodaya Yojana (PMGY-Shiksha), launched in 2000-01, provided additional central assistance specifically for primary education and literacy to states for creation of new school buildings, appointment of additional teachers, and providing free textbooks. The component was a bridge before Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan was operationalised fully.
