PMGKAY was launched in April 2020 during COVID-19 to provide 5 kg additional free food grains per person per month over and above NFSA entitlement. Extended multiple times, it was subsumed into NFSA from January 2024, making NFSA grain free for all 81.35 crore beneficiaries.
