National Rural Employment Programme (NREP)

Launched in October 1980 by the Sixth Five Year Plan, NREP replaced the Food for Work Programme and earlier rural employment schemes. It aimed to generate 300-400 million mandays of employment annually for rural poor through labour-intensive public works. The programme was funded on a 50:50 Centre-State basis and created durable community assets. NREP was merged with RLEGP to form the Jawahar Rozgar Yojana (JRY) in April 1989.
