Launched in August 1995 as part of the National Social Assistance Programme (NSAP), NOAPS provided a monthly pension of ₹75 to destitute persons aged 65 years and above from BPL families. It was one of the first Central Government cash transfer schemes for the elderly poor. NOAPS was renamed the Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension Scheme (IGNOAPS) in November 2007 with enhanced benefits.
