Ministry of Rural Development (transferred to Health 2001)
Introduced in August 1995 as the third component of the National Social Assistance Programme, NMBS provided a cash benefit of ₹500 to pregnant women from BPL households for their first two live births. The scheme was transferred to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in 2001 and integrated into the Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY) in April 2005, which offered higher incentives and institutional delivery support.
