राष्ट्रीय कृषि बीमा योजना
Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperation
Launched in Rabi 1999-2000 replacing the Comprehensive Crop Insurance Scheme (CCIS), the National Agricultural Insurance Scheme (NAIS) covered yield losses due to natural calamities, pests, and diseases on an area-yield basis. It was compulsory for loanee farmers and optional for non-loanee farmers. NAIS was one of India's largest crop insurance programmes covering over 19 million farmers annually at its peak. It was restructured as PMFBY in 2016.
