Mahatma Gandhi NREGA (MGNREGS)

Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) is India's most significant social safety net for rural households. It legally guarantees 100 days of wage employment per financial year to every rural household whose adult members are willing to do unskilled manual work. The wage is paid directly to the worker's bank or post office account within 15 days. If work is not provided within 15 days of application, the worker is entitled to an unemployment allowance.

MGNREGA is unique because it is demand-driven — the government must provide work if you apply for it. This makes it fundamentally different from other schemes where beneficiaries wait for allocation. Works undertaken include road construction, water conservation, soil erosion prevention, rural sanitation, and plantation. As of 2026, the scheme covers all rural districts in India and employs over 15 crore workers annually.

To apply for MGNREGA work, submit a written application to your Gram Panchayat. A Job Card (MGNREGA Job Card) will be issued within 15 days — this card records all work done and wages received.
