Launched in July 2004 (pilot concept from 1997), KGBV established residential schools at upper primary level (Classes 6-8) for girls from SC, ST, OBC, and minority communities in educationally backward blocks. Each KGBV had 100 seats and an attached hostel. The scheme was integrated into the Samagra Shiksha framework in 2018-19 and expanded to Class 12. The original standalone KGBV scheme is considered historical.
