Launched on 12 April 2005 under NRHM, JSY modified and replaced the National Maternity Benefit Scheme (NMBS) by providing cash incentives to pregnant women from BPL families for institutional delivery. It provided ₹1,400 in low-performing states and ₹700 in high-performing states, plus ASHA incentives. JSY transformed India's institutional delivery rate from 26% in 2005 to 79% by 2013. JSY continues but in significantly revised form under the Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan framework.
