Jal Jeevan Mission (Har Ghar Jal)

Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) is the central government's mission to provide safe and adequate tap water supply through individual household tap connections to all rural households in India by 2024 — now extended to cover all remaining households by 2026. Launched in 2019, JJM is one of the largest water supply programmes in the world, targeting over 19 crore rural households.

The mission works by funding states to create water supply infrastructure — borewells, water treatment plants, pipelines, and last-mile connections — and then maintaining Functional Household Tap Connections (FHTCs) that provide at least 55 litres per person per day of potable water. Village Water and Sanitation Committees (VWSCs) are responsible for local maintenance of the infrastructure.

As of July 2026, over 14 crore rural households have been provided with tap connections — from less than 3.2 crore in 2019. States like Goa, Telangana, and Gujarat have achieved near-100% coverage.
