Ministry of Social Welfare (later Women and Child Development)
Launched on 2 October 1975 during the Emergency period, ICDS is one of India's largest and most enduring child welfare programmes. It delivered a package of six services â supplementary nutrition, immunisation, health check-ups, referral services, pre-school education, and nutrition & health education â through Anganwadi centres. While the programme continues in a revised form as Saksham Anganwadi and POSHAN 2.0 since 2021, the original ICDS framework was substantially restructured.
