Ministry of Food and Agriculture
The HYVP, launched in Kharif 1966 under M.S. Swaminathan and Agriculture Minister C. Subramaniam, introduced Mexican dwarf wheat and IR-8 rice varieties to India, marking the beginning of the Green Revolution. The programme distributed HYV seeds of wheat, rice, maize, jowar, and bajra to farmers along with a package of fertiliser, irrigation, and credit support. It transformed India from a food-deficit nation to near self-sufficiency within a decade.
