In 2005, the Employees' State Insurance Corporation extended medical benefits to retired insured persons and their spouses who had been insured for at least five years. For a nominal contribution of ₹10 per month, retired ESI members and their spouses could access ESIC dispensaries and hospitals lifelong. This was one of the first portability provisions in Indian social security. The scheme continued but was restructured under the ESI (Central) Rules amendment of 2016.
