Initiated in 1973-74 during the Fifth Five Year Plan, the Drought Prone Areas Programme aimed at restoring ecological balance in 70 identified drought-prone districts across 13 states by developing land, water, and vegetative cover. DPAP pursued integrated watershed development and was continued in successive Plan periods until it was merged into the Integrated Watershed Management Programme (IWMP) in 2009.
