BharatNet (Rural Broadband)

BharatNet is India's national optical fibre broadband network being built to connect all 2.5 lakh Gram Panchayats (village councils) in the country with high-speed internet. Implemented by BBNL (Bharat Broadband Network Limited) under the Department of Telecommunications, BharatNet uses a combination of optical fibre cable, radio, and satellite technology to reach even the most remote villages.

The significance of BharatNet for rural citizens extends beyond internet access. Once a Gram Panchayat is connected, it enables: high-speed Common Service Centres (CSCs) for government services, digital classrooms and tele-education, tele-medicine consultations, smart agriculture services, and e-commerce access for rural entrepreneurs. The infrastructure also underpins village-level governance systems including digital panchayat accounts and MGNREGA electronic muster rolls.

As of July 2026, BharatNet has connected over 2 lakh Gram Panchayats with optical fibre. The last-mile connectivity to individual households is provided through local internet service providers and CSCs.
