Every year, over 10 lakh candidates register for the UPSC Civil Services Examination — one of the most competitive exams in the world. Only about 1,000 are finally selected. The difference between those who clear it and those who do not is rarely intelligence. It is strategy, consistency, and knowing exactly what the exam demands. This guide explains everything a beginner needs to know about UPSC CSE 2026.
The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts the Civil Services Examination annually to recruit officers for the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), and over 20 other Group A and Group B central services. Successful candidates are posted as District Collectors, SP-level police officers, diplomats, and senior officers in central ministries.
The UPSC CSE 2026 notification is expected in February 2026 on upsc.gov.in. Preliminary Examination date: typically held in May/June. Mains Examination: typically in September. Interviews: April–May 2027. The entire cycle from notification to final result takes approximately 14–16 months. Candidates should plan their preparation to peak around the Prelims date.

Educational qualification: Bachelor's degree from any recognised university (any subject). Age limit: 21–32 years for General category. 21–35 for OBC (3-year relaxation). 21–37 for SC/ST (5-year relaxation). Number of attempts: 6 for General, 9 for OBC, unlimited for SC/ST (within age limit). Candidates appearing in the final year of graduation are also eligible to apply.
Stage 1 — Prelims (Qualifying): Two papers — GS Paper 1 (100 questions, 200 marks) and CSAT Paper 2 (80 questions, 200 marks, qualifying at 33%). Only GS Paper 1 marks count for Prelims merit. Stage 2 — Mains (Merit-determining): 9 papers including Essay (250 marks), GS Papers 1–4 (250 marks each), Optional Subject (2 papers, 250 marks each), and two qualifying language papers. Total: 1,750 marks count for ranking. Stage 3 — Interview: 275 marks. Final merit = Mains + Interview.
Start with NCERTs (Classes 6–12) for History, Geography, Polity, Economics, and Science. This takes 3–4 months. Then move to standard reference books: Laxmikanth for Polity, Spectrum for Modern History, GC Leong for Geography, Ramesh Singh for Economy. Read one newspaper daily and make short notes. Begin answer writing practice from month 4 onwards — do not wait until Mains. Join a test series 3 months before Prelims.
Reading too many books instead of mastering a few. Neglecting CSAT until the last month (it has a qualifying cut-off). Not practising answer writing for Mains until it is too late. Choosing an optional subject based on popularity rather than personal interest and strength. Ignoring revision — reading new material without revising old content is the biggest preparation mistake.
