Indian Railways is India's largest employer, with over 13 lakh employees and thousands of new vacancies every year. Railway recruitment happens through multiple boards — RRB (Railway Recruitment Board) for technical and non-technical posts, and RRC (Railway Recruitment Cell) for Group D. With so many posts across different qualification levels, many candidates are confused about which post to target. This guide clarifies every major Railway recruitment category.
RRB NTPC (Non-Technical Popular Categories) has both graduate and undergraduate level posts. Graduate posts (Level 5–6): Junior Account Assistant, Senior Commercial cum Ticket Clerk, Goods Guard, Traffic Assistant. Undergraduate posts (Level 2–3): Junior Clerk cum Typist, Accounts Clerk, Commercial cum Ticket Clerk. Salary ranges from ₹19,900 to ₹35,400 basic pay. NTPC is the most popular Railway recruitment — it typically draws 1+ crore applicants. If you are a graduate, target Level 5–6 posts for better salary and career growth.
RRB Group D (Level 1) recruits Track Maintainer, Helper (Electrical/Engineering/Signal), Porter, and Gateman. Basic pay: ₹18,000 (Level 1). This is the entry-level Railway post. Despite lower pay, Group D is permanent central government employment with all Railway perks: free travel pass, RELHS medical cover, railway quarters, and NPS pension. Minimum qualification is Class 10 pass or ITI. This is ideal for candidates who could not complete graduation.

RRB Junior Engineer (JE) recruits for technical posts in Electrical, Civil, Mechanical, Signal & Telecom, IT, and Drawing & Design branches. Pay Level 6: Basic ₹35,400. Minimum qualification is Diploma in Engineering or B.E./B.Tech. JE posts involve technical work — maintenance, inspection, and supervision of railway assets. Career progression to SSE (Senior Section Engineer, Level 7) through Departmental Competitive Examination.
RRB Assistant Loco Pilot (ALP) drives trains initially as Assistant, with promotion to Loco Pilot Senior (goods train) and then Passenger Loco Pilot over time. Pay Level 2: Basic ₹19,900 for ALP. Minimum qualification is 10th pass + ITI (in a relevant trade) or Diploma. ALP involves irregular working hours, night shifts, and outstation duties — but also brings higher allowances for running duties. Career growth to Loco Pilot, Senior LP, and Loco Pilot Instructor.
RRB SSE (Senior Section Engineer): Level 7, Basic ₹44,900. For B.E./B.Tech graduates in technical branches. This is a Group B gazetted post — one of the highest technical posts in Railways recruited through RRB. RPF (Railway Protection Force) Sub-Inspector and Constable: Recruited separately for protecting Railway property and passengers. SI is Level 6 (₹35,400 basic) requiring graduation. Constable is Level 3 (₹21,700 basic) for 12th pass.
10th pass only → RRB Group D or RRB ALP (with ITI). 12th pass → RRB NTPC undergraduate posts. Graduation in any stream → RRB NTPC graduate posts (Level 5–6) + SSC CGL for comparison. Diploma in Engineering → RRB JE + ALP. B.E./B.Tech → RRB JE, RRB SSE + consider RRB NTPC as backup. Target multiple posts simultaneously since Railway recruitment cycles often overlap and the syllabus has significant overlap.
